Google rejected Trump's proposal to rename the Atlantic Ocean

US President Donald Trump approached Google leadership asking to rename the Atlantic Ocean in honor of himself or America, but received a refusal.

It is noted that the president contacted Google CEO Sundar Pichai by phone and asked to make such a change.

“I only like two oceans: the Atlantic and the Pacific. I do not want to give the name of Trump or America to any ocean other than these two. So we seriously considered the Atlantic Ocean option, and I called Google Maps. They handled the lake issue brilliantly... And after the story with the Gulf, they still haven't recovered. I said: 'Sundar, I'm thinking about the Atlantic Ocean'.”

According to Trump, Pichai did not agree to this and explained his refusal as follows: “No, no, no. I can't do it this time... The situation with the oceans is completely different, sir. They wash the shores of many countries. Please don't ask us to do this.”

The president later added that he changed his mind and decided to leave the ocean's name as the Atlantic.

Trump previously recalled his executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as well as his attempt to change Lake Ontario to Lake America amid a trade dispute between the US and Canada. At the time, he also signed an executive order requiring US federal agencies to use this new name.

In these cases, the new name on the maps is reflected for US residents, Canadian citizens see the previous name, and for the rest of the world, both names are displayed simultaneously.

Trump had previously put forward a proposal to name the Strait of Hormuz after himself as well. Last month, amid the ongoing US war with Iran, he wrote on the Truth Social network: “Should we rename the Strait of Hormuz to the TRUMP STRAIT??? Just like America itself, it would be much 'hotter' than before!”
