France and the US support strengthening Ukraine's air defense

French President Emmanuel Macron discussed in New York with US President Donald Trump an initiative to introduce a moratorium on strikes against energy facilities during Russia's war against Ukraine.

Macron announced this on September 21 on the social network X.

"We will also join our efforts to achieve a moratorium on strikes against Ukraine's energy and civilian infrastructure. Civilians must be protected. We must start serious negotiations on peace terms between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible," the French leader said.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting with Trump, Macron said that the parties reached a unanimous opinion on the need to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities.

According to him, the issue of supplying Ukraine with additional interceptor missiles to defend against Russian air attacks was also discussed.

On the evening of September 21, a bilateral meeting between Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also began in New York.

Prior to this, Zelenskyy met with American lawmakers and thanked them for passing legislation providing for harsh sanctions against Russia.

"I want the sanctions to start working," the Ukrainian leader said.

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is being held in New York on September 22–26. Around 130 heads of state and government are expected to participate in it.

Zelenskyy is also scheduled to meet with Donald Trump on September 22.
