Five autonomous drinking water systems for saiga antelopes installed in Ustyurt

In the "Saigachy" complex landscape reserve under the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, five autonomous drinking water systems have been installed to provide wild animals with water.

This initiative was implemented by the Ecology Committee in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) within the framework of the "Aral Sea Wetlands" project.

In the conditions of the Ustyurt desert, where water resources are limited, the availability of additional water sources is of great importance in preserving saiga antelopes and other representatives of the local fauna.

The autonomous systems run on solar energy and are fully automated. Each of them is equipped with water reservoirs with a capacity of 3 cubic meters, pumps, sensors, and meters. This allows for a stable supply of water without requiring a permanent connection to centralized electricity and water supply sources.

Along with the drinking systems, 10 cameras and 10 camera traps were also installed in the area. They allow for 24-hour observation of the animals, recording their movements and use of the drinking sites, as well as collecting data for further monitoring of the population status.

Creating additional water sources for saiga antelopes living in the harsh natural conditions of Ustyurt is of important significance in preserving and restoring wild animal populations.

The installation of autonomous drinking water systems is one of the measures being implemented to preserve biodiversity in Ustyurt, and it also allows for monitoring the status of animals and collecting necessary data through modern observation tools.
