FBI officially blames North Korea for the attack on Binance, while Trump expresses doubt
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has officially held North Korean hackers responsible for the theft of $6.3 billion from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange. Prior to this, the analytics company TRM Labs had suggested that North Korean hackers might be behind the attack.
The FBI's official statement released on October 31 noted that North Korean hackers known as TraderTraitor were responsible for the attack.
According to investigation data, the hackers have begun converting the stolen money into the Ethereum cryptocurrency. In doing so, they are attempting to conceal the source of the funds.
The FBI, together with the US Secret Service and the Criminal Investigation division of the Internal Revenue Service, urged cryptocurrency platforms to block transactions linked to the hackers.
US President Donald Trump expressed doubt regarding North Korea's involvement in the attack.
Answering journalists' questions on October 31, Trump said the US is not yet certain that North Korea is behind the attack.
"We don't know that it's North Korea. But if it is, we will discuss this issue with the DPRK," he said.
According to Reuters, Binance has covered 95 percent of the stolen funds. The company is also gradually restoring temporarily suspended cryptocurrency withdrawal services.
As a reminder, in February 2025, the FBI also accused North Korea's TraderTraitor hacker group of stealing $1.5 billion from the Bybit cryptocurrency exchange.
