Dutch taste returns to Uzbek potatoes
It all started with a decree by the head of state dated September 8, 2025, on the development of seed potato production in the country. In the course of implementing this document, the Bulungur — Agro Star enterprise purchased 6,000 tons of elite seeds from the Dutch company Agrico.
High-yielding varieties Esmee, Arizona, Alouette, Picasso, and Agatha were delivered to Uzbekistan. The seed material was offered to the population at affordable prices — without any retail markup.
The first results showed that betting on high-quality seeds can significantly change the industry's performance.
In the Bulungur district of the Samarkand region, the average yield on an area of 40 hectares reached 40–50 tons per hectare. On household plots of the population, the figure was even higher — about 60 tons per hectare.
Now, the obtained seed material is being used to expand crops. In particular, the seeds have been sent to the Nishan district of the Kashkadarya region, where Uzagrostar Holding is implementing a major agricultural project to restore the potato seed production system, UzA reports.
As Fazliddin Mukhiddinov, director of Uzagrostar Holding, notes, potatoes are a daily consumer good, so an increase in domestic yields can simultaneously affect both producers' incomes and the food supply on the domestic market. The purpose of the project is to use high-quality starting material for further reproduction and distribution of varieties among producers. If imported elite varieties become the foundation of domestic seed production, the industry will be able to gradually move from solving the seed shortage problem to forming a permanent chain: breeding and elite material — reproduction — quality seeds — higher yields — stable production of ware potatoes.
And then, the story of the Dutch seeds will no longer be just a tale of who helped bring back the taste of Uzbek potatoes. It will be about how a quality seed can become the reboot point for an entire industry.
