Dozens killed in train collision in Spain
At least 46 people have been killed as a result of a collision between two high-speed trains in the province of Toledo in central Spain.
The accident occurred around 9:00 a.m. local time on the morning of October 28. An AVE high-speed train operated by Renfe (the state railway operator), traveling on the Madrid–Seville route, rear-ended an Iryo company (a private railway operator) train that had stopped on a section near the town of Urda.
Footage circulating on social media shows several carriages derailed and a fire broke out.
Due to the accident, train service on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line has been suspended. The departure of several trains has been delayed.
According to sources from El Pais and ABC, the accident may have been caused by human error. Presumably, an employee of the state company dealing with fixing a fault in the railway signaling system failed to warn the AVE train that the Iryo train was stopped ahead.
