José Mourinho once again created the impression of a nostalgia trip. In the first round, he faced his former team Inter. And now he was a guest at the stadium of another beloved club — Roma. The home fans welcomed him with banners. It was also a special match for Mbappé: on this day he broke Messi's record, becoming the youngest player to reach 100 appearances in the main European club competition — at 27 years and 298 days. Vinícius was also in the spotlight. On that day, the La Liga management announced that the Brazilian player was suspended for 4 matches for his actions in the game against Villarreal, meaning he could now only play in European competitions for a certain period.

Returning to the Champions League after a seven-year break, the Romans started the match very actively and began testing Courtois one after another. The Belgian goalkeeper first saved Hermoso's shot aimed at the corner, but in the home team's next attack, a deflection following de Roon's shot left him helpless. Five minutes later, the home goalkeeper found himself in a similar situation, and Mbappé leveled the score.

In the second half, Vinícius turned into the anti-hero. Trying to pass with his heel in the center of the pitch, he lost the ball, and the quick counter-attack that followed led to Malen's goal. Shortly after, the Dutch forward completed a brace in another counter-attack.

After that, Mourinho's patience ran out, and he substituted Vinícius as early as the 59th minute. As he left the pitch, the Brazilian winger openly expressed his displeasure to the coaching staff. However, Endrick, who came on to replace him, completely turned the game around. Considered one of the shortest players in the Madrid squad, the forward headed the ball twice during corner kicks: on the first occasion, Espi turned in the rebound saved by the goalkeeper, and on the second, the goal was credited to Endrick himself.
