Reports of cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in children in Uzbekistan are spreading on social networks. This is a rare but severe complication that can develop several years after suffering from measles.
According to the World Health Organization, SSPE can occur in 4–11 children for every 100,000 who have had measles.
This disease is associated with progressive brain damage. Possible manifestations include behavioral changes, movement disorders, and seizures. In the later stages, a child may lose the ability to speak and fall into a coma.
At the same time, the information being distributed on social networks about specific cases requires official confirmation. Work is underway in Uzbekistan on the early detection of SSPE and the provision of specialized medical care to patients.
