BYD recalls nearly 200,000 electric vehicles due to a brake pedal defect

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles due to a detected defect in the brake pedal. The issue affects cars manufactured between 2014 and 2022. The company stated that it will eliminate the defect free of charge.

BYD is recalling 183,211 Tang crossovers and Qin sedans produced during these years. According to SAMR, the problem was identified in the brake pedal stopper pads. It was revealed that these parts could crack or shift out of place. In some cases, this could cause the brake lights to remain continuously illuminated even when the brake pedal is not pressed. The regulator stated that such a defect could confuse other road users and pose a risk of an accident.

BYD announced that it will replace the defective part on all vehicles free of charge through authorized dealers.

This defect could also lead to the failure of the power steering. They have also promised to resolve this issue free of charge.

Prior to this, in October 2025, BYD began a large-scale recall of its electric vehicles. At that time, it was reported that 115,000 cars would be recalled for service due to safety issues that could cause a fire. In addition, defects occurred in the batteries, causing their capacity to decrease. Reuters called that event the largest recall in BYD's history.
