Average salary 7.3 million soums, median salary 4.2 million soums: National Statistics Committee publishes median salary for the first time
The National Statistics Committee has published the median salary alongside the average monthly nominal calculated salary in Uzbekistan for the first time.
In January-September 2026, the average monthly nominal calculated salary in Uzbekistan amounted to 7 million 274.1 thousand soums. This figure increased by 18 percent compared to the same period in 2025. Also, according to experimental calculations, the median salary across the republic during this period was 4 million 166.3 thousand soums.
According to the explanation of the National Statistics Committee, both the average salary and the median indicator are used to assess the level of wages. Although both refer to wages, they are calculated differently and carry different meanings.
The total wages calculated for employees are divided by their average number.
For example, let the monthly salaries of 5 employees be as follows:
Their total salary amounts to 40 million soums. If this amount is divided by 5 employees, the average salary is 8 million soums. In this case, the income of high-earning employees can significantly increase the average figure.
To find the median, employees' salaries are ordered from lowest to highest. The value located right in the middle of the sequence is considered the median. In the above example, the middle value is 5 million soums. Thus, the median salary amount is 5 million soums. The median means that half of the employees receive less than this amount, and the other half receive more.
The average salary makes it possible to assess the general level of remuneration and its changes. The median, on the other hand, shows how wages are distributed among employees and the midpoint of that distribution.
"Therefore, the average salary does not mean that most employees receive exactly that much salary. In order to get a more complete picture of wages, it is advisable to analyze the average and median indicators together. In Uzbekistan, the National Statistics Committee has also launched the calculation of the median salary alongside the average salary. This allows for a more complete assessment of the wage level," the committee noted.
