At least 27 dead and hundreds evacuated after strikes near Kyiv
A 14-year-old girl is among the dead after an attack near the capital overnight, the region's governor said.
An overnight drone assault in Ukraine's Kyiv region has resulted in at least 27 fatalities and the evacuation of hundreds, according to the regional governor.
Tymur Tkachenko confirmed the death toll and reported that 42 individuals, including four children, sustained injuries in the Russian strike on the Bucha district. Additionally, 381 people were evacuated from the area. Smoke was observed emanating from a residential zone in the Kyiv region early Saturday.
Search and rescue efforts were underway early Saturday as emergency crews assessed structural damage. Tkachenko later disclosed that a separate attack in the Boryspil district claimed the life of a 14-year-old, labeling it "yet another victim of Russian terror."
President Volodymyr Zelensky extended his sympathies to the victims' families, noting that over 300 emergency personnel were dispatched to the strike zone. Zelensky also reported further overnight attacks in the Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia regions.
"Ukraine cannot be alone in finding solutions to protect against such strikes, and I thank everyone who helps with additional support packages and sanctions against Russia," Zelensky posted on Telegram.
The Ukrainian military stated it intercepted 233 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) overnight into Saturday.
Both Russia and Ukraine have escalated their attacks in recent months, with Kyiv primarily targeting Russian economic infrastructure. In the past 24 hours, Moscow reported strikes on its Belgorod and Rostov regions, with Rostov Governor Yuri Slusar confirming seven injuries in the latter attack.
