An employee of the anti-plague institute in the Irkutsk region has died from pneumonic plague

A 27-year-old employee of the anti-plague institute in the Irkutsk region died from pneumonic plague two days after being hospitalized.

According to preliminary data, the infection could have occurred at work after she broke a test tube containing infected material. Shortly before her illness, the woman had also been on a business trip to Buryatia, where natural plague foci exist.

The first test for the infection showed a positive result, and a repeat study confirmed the diagnosis. On September 29, the woman was hospitalized, and she died two days later.

Following the detection of the case, about 200 people are being checked for potential contact with the patient, and more than 100 are in the hospital under observation. A quarantine has been introduced at the medical facility, and the admission of new patients has been temporarily suspended.

The circumstances of the infection are being investigated.
