Altman: AGI could appear by the end of the year
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that artificial general intelligence (AGI), capable of performing a wide range of human-level intellectual tasks, could emerge by the end of 2026. The company plans to create an internal system that aligns with its definition of AGI.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that the first manifestations of such technology could emerge by the end of 2026.
In an article published in TIME magazine, Altman stated that OpenAI plans to create an internal system that meets the criteria of what the company itself considers to be AGI.
At the same time, there is currently no single definition of artificial general intelligence accepted by all experts.
OpenAI defines AGI as highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.
Company representatives state that significant progress has been made towards creating AGI. According to the assessment of OpenAI's Chief Scientist Mark Chen, the company is approximately 80 percent close to the goal of creating AGI.
Meanwhile, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said that if the company can realize its plans, the end of 2026 could be viewed in the future as the period when AGI emerged.
The company points to its future Astra line of models as one of its promising developments in this direction.
OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki noted that Astra can already perform research tasks at the level of an intern.
Altman, speaking at an event where an early version of the model was demonstrated to a group of clients, said that Astra could be the first model capable of inventing something new and significant.
In his opinion, such capabilities bring the system very close to the concept of AGI.
However, these statements by OpenAI have not yet been independently verified. The company has also not yet published a technical report detailing Astra's capabilities.
Therefore, the assessment that AGI will be created by the end of 2026 currently remains a projection by OpenAI executives and specialists.
