Access to sewerage will be expanded in Kashkadarya and Navoi
Wastewater treatment facilities and hundreds of kilometers of sewer networks will be built in Shakhrisabz, Kitab, and Karmana districts.
Access to sewerage systems is expanding in the Kashkadarya and Navoi regions.
Construction contracts have been signed in Uzbekistan to develop sewerage infrastructure in Shakhrisabz and the center of the Kitab district of the Kashkadarya region, as well as in the Karmana district of the Navoi region. These projects include the construction of treatment facilities, sewer networks, and pumping stations, which will provide access to sewerage services for nearly 290,000 people.
The total cost of the projects is estimated at €119 million. The loan agreement between Uzbekistan and the French Development Agency (AfD) was signed on March 25, 2022. In addition, the European Commission, through the AfD, provided a grant of €8.15 million for the implementation of these projects.
The signing ceremony took place as part of cooperation with the AfD and the European Union. Representatives of the French Embassy in Uzbekistan, the EU Delegation, the French Development Agency, construction companies, technical supervision organizations, and the management of JSC Uzsuvtaminot participated in the event.
Construction contracts, as well as agreements for technical supervision and consulting support, were signed for the projects. The French Development Agency held a two-stage tender to select contractors.
Under the Shakhrisabz construction package, the Turkish company Alkatas Insaat ve Taahut A.S. and MESMER-EAST LLC will handle detailed design and construction work. Alkatas Insaat ve Taahut A.S. has been selected as the contractor for the Navoi construction package. Technical supervision will be entrusted to South Korean DOHWA Engineering Co., Ltd. and French SAFEGE S.A.S.
In the Kashkadarya region, the project will cover Shakhrisabz and the center of the Kitab district. The construction of two treatment facilities with a total capacity of 53,000 cubic meters per day, 521.2 km of sewer networks, and 10 pumping stations is planned here.
Once completed, sewerage services will be available to 240,400 residents of 51 mahallas. In the center of the Kitab district, a centralized sewerage system will be created for the first time, as it is currently lacking. As a result of the project, 63,400 residents will have access to services, bringing the coverage rate to 81%.
A significant expansion of the existing infrastructure is also planned in Shakhrisabz. Currently, 19,600 residents, or 8% of the city's population, are covered by sewerage. After the project's completion, this figure is expected to increase to 86%, or 177,000 residents.
A separate project will be implemented in the Karmana district of the Navoi region. It envisions the construction of a treatment facility with a capacity of 9,800 cubic meters per day, 161 km of sewer networks, and five pumping stations.
As a result, 49,400 of the 54,900 residents of 14 mahallas in the Karmana district will gain access to sewerage services for the first time. Coverage will reach 90%.
The signed agreements move the projects in Shakhrisabz, Kitab, and Karmana districts to the implementation phase. The planned work includes not only the creation of new sewerage infrastructure but also the construction of modern wastewater treatment facilities.
