Uzbekistan opens a new era of banking: an Islamic finance license has been issued for the first time

**A start has been made**
A significant event for the financial sector has taken place in Uzbekistan. The Central Bank of the republic has issued a license for Islamic banking activities for the first time. Open Bank became the first holder of such a permit, gaining the right to provide financial services in accordance with the principles of Islamic banking.
This decision opens a new stage in the development of the country's banking system, expanding financing opportunities for the population and businesses. Islamic financial instruments involve a special model of interaction between a bank and a client, based on commercial operations, partnership, leasing, and profit sharing.
The key feature of Islamic banking lies in the rejection of traditional interest on loans. Instead, mechanisms are applied where a financial institution derives income from real commercial operations, investments, or joint business activities.
The license issued to Open Bank covers several areas of work at once.
The bank will be able to attract client funds into investment deposits and provide financing on profit-sharing terms. Such a mechanism involves the participation of the parties in the results of investment activities in accordance with concluded agreements.
Another direction will be financing based on agency agreements, which allow the bank to manage funds or organize investment operations on behalf of clients.
Of particular importance is the ability to purchase goods for subsequent resale to clients in installments. Such instruments can be used to finance business activities, purchase equipment, and acquire necessary products.
In addition, the bank receives the right to finance product deliveries through advance payments, participate in joint commercial projects, and acquire equity stakes in legal entities.
A separate area will be Islamic leasing of property with the option of subsequent buyout. This instrument is potentially in demand among enterprises interested in acquiring equipment, transport, and other productive assets.
For the economy of Uzbekistan, the emergence of licensed Islamic banking means the expansion of available financial instruments. The new model is capable of attracting clients who previously refrained from using traditional credit products for religious or economic reasons.
The development of Islamic finance may also create additional conditions for attracting investment and expanding entrepreneurial activity, especially in the small and medium-sized business segment. At the same time, Islamic banking operations remain part of the country's regulated financial system and are carried out within the framework of the legislation of Uzbekistan.
The Central Bank specifically emphasized the need to verify the licenses of financial institutions before using their services. Information about relevant permits is published on the regulator's official website.
Thus, the issuance of the first license becomes an important step toward shaping a more diverse financial market in Uzbekistan, where traditional and Islamic banking instruments can develop in parallel.
