Footage capturing an unusual natural phenomenon filmed in France has spread widely across the internet. In the images, red sprites can be seen illuminating the night sky for a brief moment. Their extraordinary shape gave the scene a look straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Sprites are short-lived electrical discharges that occur in the upper layers of the atmosphere during thunderstorms. They form at an altitude of approximately 40–100 kilometers.

Photographer Florian Rieu captured this phenomenon on September 16 over the mountain village of Montemaggiori in France. According to him, he meticulously planned and calculated the shooting process in advance.

As a result, the photographer managed to capture on camera the red flashes that appear in the sky for merely an instant. The sprites in the video resemble jellyfish that appear in the air and disappear in a flash.

Such a phenomenon usually lasts for only a few milliseconds. Because they appear and vanish in such a short amount of time, these flashes are very difficult to notice with the naked eye. However, they can sometimes be captured with the help of a camera.
