75 Members of the European Parliament have called for a complete phase-out of Russian oil and gas
According to DW, MEPs sent a joint letter to European Council President António Costa and the leaders of EU states on October 14.
The appeal, sent ahead of the European Council meeting, emphasized the need not to soften the EU's policy towards Russia and to present a unified stance on this issue.
The authors of the letter believe that no concessions should be made to Moscow until a lasting ceasefire and peace are established, and until justice is served for war crimes and crimes of aggression allegedly committed by Russia and its partners.
The MEPs also demanded that Russia pay compensation, including reparations, for the damage caused to Ukraine and its people.
The appeal proposed continuing efforts toward a full rejection of Russian energy resources and introducing a complete ban on oil and gas imports. It also requested the development of a new package of sanctions aimed at further reducing the Kremlin's revenues from energy exports.
The MEPs assessed US President Donald Trump's approach to Russia and the "energy ceasefire" as a mistake, urging European leaders not to follow it.
"We urge you to maintain our principled position and support Ukraine until it achieves victory," the letter reads.
These demands constitute a joint appeal by 75 MEPs and are not a new sanctions decision adopted by the EU.
