4 candidates who could replace Zelensky named

The news magazine Newsweek (USA) has named four politicians who could potentially run for the position of the next president of Ukraine.

The publication formed this list against the backdrop of the US president's call to hold new elections in Ukraine.

Valerii Zaluzhnyi. Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, currently Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom;

Kyrylo Budanov. Former head of Ukrainian military intelligence (GUR), currently head of the Office of the President of Ukraine;

Mykhailo Fedorov. Minister of Digital Transformation and former Minister of Defense. Currently retired;

Petro Poroshenko. The fifth president of Ukraine, leader of the opposition party "European Solidarity".

On October 10, US leader Donald Trump proposed holding new elections in Ukraine and accused Volodymyr Zelensky of trying to harm the US.

"I propose finding a new leader who can make a deal. Because he could have made many deals, but for some reason he never did," the US leader said.

The next day, in an interview with ABC News, Zelensky said that Ukraine was ready to hold presidential elections if Russia agreed to a full ceasefire for 60 days. The Kremlin rejected this, stating it was only ready to stop attacks on the day of the election.

Presidential elections in Ukraine were supposed to take place at the end of March 2024, but were not held due to the imposition of martial law. In May of that year, Zelensky's five-year term in office ended. Since then, Moscow has considered him an illegitimate president.

Meanwhile, the European Union, the UN, and the US Department of State continue to recognize Zelensky as president despite the expiration of his term.
