Heatwaves could kill thousands annually across Central Asia by 2090, World Bank warns

Central Asia is heating up — and the risks are growing fast. According to a new World Bank report, by 2090, heatwaves could cause up to 23,000 deaths each year in cities like Tashkent and Astana. In Uzbekistan, Termez and Turtkul are already among the hottest places, with projections pointing to even more dangerous conditions ahead. By 2050, most cities across the region are expected to face 40 to 70 additional hot days annually, and by the end of the century, heatwaves could last up to two months with peak temperatures rising by 4°C.
