The National Security Committee (NSC) of Kazakhstan has detained 10 individuals in the city of Atyrau on suspicion of forming an extremist group and planning a coup d'état in the country. This was reported by the press service of the agency, "Vedomosti" reported.

According to the NSC, the members of the group planned to forcibly alter the constitutional order in the western region of the country. The detention operation was carried out on October 30 under the supervision of the prosecution authorities as part of a pre-trial investigation.

The suspects are accused of creating and leading an extremist group, participating in its activities, promoting terrorism, and inciting religious hatred.

Additionally, the agency reported that the activities of three underground educational centers intended for children and adolescents were terminated.

According to the National Security Committee, some of the detainees had previously been convicted of terrorism and other crimes. In the interest of the investigation, further details were not disclosed.

In 2025, officers of the National Security Committee of Kazakhstan detained five foreign citizens who were planning a terrorist attack in Almaty. In September and October of the same year, criminal cases were initiated against eight citizens of Kazakhstan on suspicion of promoting terrorism, and they were detained.
