A Chinese citizen trapped inside a tunnel due to a natural disaster in Nepal was rescued 10 days after the incident. According to the Nepal Army, Lu Haitao was trapped in the 225-meter tunnel of the Upper Trishuli-1 hydroelectric project due to floods that occurred on August 26.
He was not the only person trapped in the tunnel as a result of the natural disaster. It is estimated that during the floods and landslides, hundreds of people did not manage to get out of the tunnel. Lu Haitao is the third person to be found alive in such a situation. A few days before the incident, rescuers had pulled out two more people from the tunnel of the Upper Trishuli 3A hydroelectric power station on the same river.
Officials said no visible serious injuries were found on Lu's body. His vital signs were stable. However, the Chinese man showed symptoms of mild hypothermia. For this reason, Lu was taken to a military hospital by helicopter.
On August 26, a massive glacier collapse in the Himalayan region triggered severe flooding. According to the Nepal Disaster Management Authority, at least 1,344 people have died and another 4,887 remain missing in the country. Among them are 583 foreign nationals.
According to China's state news agency Xinhua, 31 people died and 531 went missing in Tibet as a result of the natural disaster. There are 261 foreign nationals on the list.
On Saturday, the Nepal Army also rescued a woman named Chandika Kumari Shrestha alive from her flooded home in Betrawati. Currently, rescuers continue to search for other people trapped in the tunnels.
