You could be eligible for a £150 reduction on your energy bill, but you must act before the deadline. A quick call to your energy provider to confirm your name is on the electricity bill could secure you this discount for the upcoming winter.
Even though the thought of heating costs might be far from your mind during the summer, energy prices are projected to increase again this winter. Energy suppliers will review customer records as of Sunday, August 23rd, to determine eligibility for the Warm Home Discount.
This government initiative provides a £150 discount on bills for individuals receiving means-tested benefits, such as Universal Credit. Later this month, millions will discover the extent of winter energy prices when Ofgem reveals the quarterly price cap for the period spanning October to December.
To assist those who may face difficulties with payments, energy companies distribute the £150 Warm Home Discount to approximately six million households during the winter. Households receiving Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, and Universal Credit are eligible.
Qualifying households should automatically receive the discount, provided their supplier serves more than 1,000 customers. However, this automatic application only occurs if your name is on the bill and you are receiving one of the aforementioned benefits. Being named on the bill also enables suppliers to offer enhanced support, such as repayment plans, to customers with energy debt.
Individuals who have recently moved may not have their name listed on their electricity bill. Eligible customers using pre-payment meters, who top up with a key or card, must also ensure their household's account is registered under their name.
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh urged, "If you know someone who might benefit, please start spreading the word and encourage them to check they are named on their energy bill."
The government also announced that 345,000 low-income households in Scotland will now automatically receive the rebate this winter, aligning Scotland's policy with those of England and Wales. Previously, eligible Scottish households were required to apply for the scheme.
