UzLiDeP Examines Legislation to Increase Sanctions for Severe Traffic Offenses
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) – The Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party's (UzLiDeP) parliamentary faction has scrutinized a proposed bill that would impose more stringent penalties for several serious traffic infractions. The party stated that this legislation aims to enhance road safety and safeguard the well-being and lives of the populace.
The draft law suggests modifications to the Code of Administrative Responsibility, introducing a new penalty that permits the temporary impoundment of motor vehicles. As per the proposal, judicial bodies could mandate that vehicles belonging to offenders be held in an impound lot for a duration of six months to one year.
Furthermore, the bill outlines more severe penalties for permitting minors to operate a vehicle, engaging in unauthorized street races, exceeding speed limits significantly, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Specifically, drivers who exceed the speed limit by over 80 km/h could face a fine reaching 26.8 million soums, in addition to the suspension of their driving license.
The proposal also establishes criminal liability when allowing a minor to drive leads to grave outcomes.
Moreover, the bill endeavors to reinforce measures against reckless driving, illicit street racing, and other perilous conduct on public thoroughfares. Under the suggested revisions, motor races would only be permissible as officially organized sporting events conducted at specially equipped venues that adhere to safety standards.
UzLiDeP indicated that these proposed alterations are designed to decrease the incidence of road accidents and foster greater discipline among those who use the roads.
In June, an interagency working group presented President Shavkat Mirziyoyev with a collection of proposals aimed at strengthening accountability for traffic violations. These initiatives included the temporary seizure of vehicles for five categories of serious offenses, the implementation of distinct administrative penalties for allowing minors to drive, organizing or participating in illegal races, and parking heavy trucks on roadsides at night.
