Uzhydromet launches Uzbekistan's first test weather balloon

Uzhydromet, Uzbekistan's national weather service, announced on Thursday the successful launch of the country's inaugural test weather balloon.

The aerological balloon was deployed in Bukhara province, signifying a significant step forward for Uzbekistan's hydrometeorological sector. This initiative aims to enhance upper-atmosphere research and improve the precision of weather forecasts.

During its flight, the balloon, fitted with a contemporary radiosonde device, gathered crucial real-time meteorological data at various altitudes. The device relayed essential metrics—such as air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, and wind direction—directly to a ground receiving station.

The atmospheric data collected will be instrumental in improving synoptic analysis, refining weather predictions, and issuing early warnings for severe weather events. Furthermore, this data will provide dependable meteorological information to critical sectors like aviation and agriculture.

This launch is consistent with national endeavors to modernize climate technology. A presidential decree issued on March 25 outlines Uzbekistan's plans to gradually implement artificial rain generation and automated wind systems. The initial stage of this project will concentrate on enhancing air quality in the capital. Required equipment will be installed in areas with low humidity across Tashkent city and the adjacent Tashkent province by October 1, 2027.
