Uzbekistan to Expand Cooperation on Groundwater Studies
Uzbekistan and the Interstate Coordination Water Commission agreed to expand cooperation on groundwater research, monitoring, and transboundary water management.
Uzbekistan Aims to Broaden Collaboration on Groundwater Research
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) – A meeting took place between Rustam Yusupov, Uzbekistan's Deputy Minister of Mining Industry and Geology, and a delegation from the Interstate Coordination Water Commission. The discussion centered on enhancing collaboration in the research and responsible utilization of groundwater reserves.
Representatives from the state organizations Uzbekhydrogeology and the HYDROINGEO Institute were also present. Attendees reviewed progress made in Uzbekistan regarding the sustainable management and safeguarding of groundwater. They also shared insights on ongoing initiatives throughout Central Asia focused on sustainable water resource management, strategies for adapting to climate change, and international and grant-supported projects concerning transboundary water bodies.
The meeting concluded with an agreement between the parties to draft and execute a memorandum of understanding. This memorandum will be established between the Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Interstate Coordination Water Commission.
The memorandum outlines plans for cooperative efforts in studying transboundary aquifers and geothermal resources, employing the water-energy-land (NEXUS) framework. It also includes provisions for implementing an automated monitoring system and jointly arranging professional development programs for hydrogeologists, covering areas such as international water diplomacy and water law.
