Uzbek Consulate Warns Citizens About Theft in Türkiye
Uzbekistan's Consulate General in Istanbul has urged citizens to take extra precautions following an increase in pickpocketing incidents in Türkiye's popular tourist areas.
The Uzbek Consulate General in Istanbul has issued a warning to its citizens intending to visit Türkiye, advising heightened vigilance due to a recent surge in pickpocketing. The diplomatic mission reported an uptick in the theft of bags containing money, passports, and other vital documents from tourists.
Analysis of monitoring data and CCTV footage by the consulate indicates that these crimes predominantly occur in densely populated areas, specifically around Sultanahmet Square and Hagia Sophia. The mission noted that minors, primarily girls, are frequently the perpetrators, discreetly taking tourists' possessions.
The Consulate General highlighted that the legal process for prosecuting juvenile offenders involves specific procedures, which can lead to extended resolution times for such cases. Consequently, citizens are strongly encouraged to remain exceptionally watchful.
Travelers are advised by the diplomatic mission to continuously monitor their personal belongings, avoid consolidating passports, cash, and other valuables in a single location, exercise caution in crowded environments, and limit carrying substantial amounts of cash unless absolutely essential.
Should a theft occur, the Consulate General recommends promptly reporting the incident to Turkish law enforcement and subsequently informing Uzbekistan's diplomatic mission in Istanbul.
