Ugandan footballer killed in attack by gunmen

Ugandan footballer David Owori killed in robbery

David Owori, captain of Uganda's most decorated football club, Villa, has died after being attacked near his home in Kampala, the BBC has learned.

Police say the attackers were trying to steal his mobile phone and other belongings. Owori, 27, was seriously injured after he tried to resist the attackers. Witnesses said the attackers beat him to death with rocks before fleeing the scene. Owori was rushed to a nearby hospital and later transferred to a private hospital. However, he died the next day from his injuries.

The Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has described Owori as "a true leader not only on the pitch but also off it".

Owori has spent most of his career in his homeland. He has also played for lower-division clubs in Sweden and Spain. He has represented Uganda at youth level and was named in the senior squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but did not play in any matches.
