Outrage as Ugandan football captain murdered in street gang attack
The 27-year-old was beaten to death by suspected robbers after resisting an attempt to steal his belongings, police say.
The football community in Uganda is in mourning following the street gang murder of national team captain David Owori. Police reported that Owori was attacked by suspected robbers outside his Kampala residence.
Ugandans are expressing profound grief and renewed outrage over violent crime after one of the country's most recognized footballers was beaten to death by alleged robbers near his home in the capital. According to police, David Owori suffered a fatal assault after resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other possessions, leading to an outpouring of sorrow and public anger regarding the prevalence of violent crime in Uganda.
The 27-year-old served as captain for Sports Club (SC) Villa, the record champions of the Uganda Premier League, where he excelled as both a right-back and midfielder. He also represented the national team, the Cranes.
SC Villa released a statement saying, "We have lost more than a player - we have lost a leader, brother and friend."
Witnesses described a group of assailants striking the footballer with paving stones on Tuesday night before robbing Owori of his belongings and fleeing, leaving him unconscious. SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye informed journalists that Owori was targeted directly outside his home in Makindye, a Kampala suburb.
Kasingye stated, "The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility."
Owori was initially taken to a nearby medical clinic and subsequently transferred to a private facility in the city, but he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. Local police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that detectives are pursuing leads to identify those responsible.
Kawala added, "The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved."
Owori's murder has sent shockwaves throughout Uganda, with the football community, fans, teammates, and politicians demanding justice. Tributes continue to pour in for the defender, who was affectionately known as Colgate.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) described Owori as "a true leader on and off the pitch." Their statement read, "David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation."
Uganda Cranes stated that the team had lost a football star who "carried the hopes of a nation." On Wednesday, Parliament observed a minute of silence in Owori's honor and called for swift investigations.
The versatile player, celebrated for his tactical discipline and ability to play across the midfield, returned to SC Villa in 2023 for a second stint, becoming one of the club's longest-serving players. He played a pivotal role in leading the record Ugandan champions to their first league title in 20 years, securing their 17th top-flight crown in 2024. His impact both on and off the pitch earned him a contract extension with the team until January 2027.
Owori also featured for Uganda's national team during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and was considered a strong candidate for future call-ups to the Cranes.
His death has ignited anger on social media, with many Ugandans questioning the level of violent crime in Kampala and advocating for tougher measures against criminals. This killing occurs just weeks after the death of another Ugandan sports star, rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, who was also fatally attacked by a mob in Kampala.
