Traffic Police Inspector Dies After Hit-and-Run in Ferghana

Traffic Police Inspector Killed in Ferghana Hit-and-Run
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) – A traffic patrol police inspector in Ferghana Region has died after being struck by an intoxicated driver in a Spark vehicle whom he was attempting to flag down. The officer succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The Ferghana Region Department of Internal Affairs' press service stated that the incident took place on July 31, around 11:30 PM, on the 20th kilometer of a highway traversing the Ukchi mahalla in Uzbekistan District.
According to the department, the 30-year-old driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, disregarded a lawful command to stop and hit Sergeant Khayitbek Karimjanov, a Senior DPS Inspector with the Public Safety Service of the Ferghana Region Department of Internal Affairs, who was on night duty.
Sergeant Karimjanov was hospitalized with critical injuries but passed away in the intensive care unit despite the medical team's efforts.
The Uzbekistan District Prosecutor's Office has launched a criminal investigation. Charges have been filed under Part 2 of Article 266 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan, pertaining to violations of traffic safety or vehicle operation rules resulting in human death, and Part 2 of Article 117 of the Criminal Code, concerning leaving a person in danger. A preliminary investigation is currently in progress.
The Department of Internal Affairs noted that Khayitbek Karimjanov had been serving in the internal affairs bodies since 2022. He is survived by his mother, wife, and two children.
