Public wake to be held for musician Glen Hansard

A public wake for musician Glen Hansard is scheduled for Monday, August 3, in Dublin, with his funeral to follow on Tuesday.

The 56-year-old, renowned as the longtime frontman of the acclaimed rock band The Frames and for his breakout role in the 1991 musical comedy film *The Commitments*, passed away in a crash during the early hours of Wednesday. This occurred just hours after he participated in a traditional music session at The Wren's Nest pub in County Dublin.

The public wake for Hansard will be held in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, from 11:00 to 16:00 local time, where he will lie in repose for those wishing to pay their respects.

His funeral service will take place the following day, Tuesday, August 4, at 13:30 at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin city centre. While the funeral will be open to the public, access inside the cathedral will be restricted due to anticipated attendance. Music during the service will be performed by Hansard's friends and family.

Tributes have poured in from across the music world, including from Ed Sheeran and Bruce Springsteen, who expressed being "heartbroken." Other prominent figures who have honored Hansard include former US president Barack Obama, US actor Rachel Zegler, *Hamilton* creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, and pop star Billie Eilish. A memorial busk was held in Dublin on Thursday evening.

Hansard, an Oscar-winning Irish musician, enjoyed a distinguished career spanning over three decades. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008 with Marketa Irglova for their work featured in the low-budget musical romance film *Once*. He and Irglova also released three albums as The Swell Season. Hansard achieved solo success as well, with his 2016 album *Didn't He Ramble* earning a Grammy nomination in 2016.

A father to a three-year-old boy, Hansard has also been recognized by charities for his dedicated efforts in raising funds for the homeless.
