Half price rail travel extended to 18-year-olds
They'll be able to buy the 16-17 Saver railcard up until the day before they turn 18.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that individuals aged 18 will soon be eligible for half-price train tickets on the majority of services, as changes to railcard regulations are set to be implemented later this month.
This initiative expands the existing 16-17 Saver railcard, which currently becomes invalid upon the holder's 18th birthday. Effective August 17, these railcards will remain valid for a full year from their purchase date. Consequently, 17-year-olds will have the option to purchase the railcard up until the day before they turn 18, ensuring its validity until the day before their 19th birthday.
The DfT highlighted that under the previous rule, over 70,000 students annually faced an average financial disadvantage of £175 compared to peers in the same academic year who had not yet reached their 18th birthday.
The 16-17 Saver Railcard, priced at £35 annually, grants holders a 50% discount on most train fares.
Rail minister Lord Hendy lauded this "common sense change" as precisely what "passengers should expect from the railway." He stated that the alteration would "lower the cost of travel at a critical time for teenagers, whether they're pursuing further education, vocational pathways or getting their footing in the jobs market."
Jacqueline Starr, chief executive of the Rail Delivery Group, an industry body, commented that this modification underscores the sector's dedication to "offering better value fares and delivering a more joined-up railway."
Kaynat Ahmad, vice president for further education at the National Union of Students, characterized the railcard as "essential for young people reliant on trains to get to college, work or training."
While 18-year-olds were already eligible for a 16-25 Railcard, this only provided a one-third discount on travel costs.
This announcement follows the government's previous statement that the cap on most single bus fares in England will be reduced from £3 to £2 next year.
