Child among three killed in Russian missile attacks near Kyiv
Russia continued its overnight attacks after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of Ukraine's dwindling supplies of missile interceptors.
Russian missile assaults close to Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, have resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals, one of whom was a child.
In the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, garages were engulfed in flames following the most recent Russian attack.
Early Saturday morning, missiles struck an area east of the capital. Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions, just days after similar strikes across Ukraine claimed 21 lives.
Timur Tkachenko, head of the regional military administration, stated that falling debris caused damage to apartment buildings and cars, and a fire erupted in a separate structure. He also confirmed that three other individuals sustained injuries in the ballistic missile strikes.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitchko posted on Telegram that emergency crews were battling blazes at a building and a fuel tank within Kyiv.
The DSNS, Ukraine's state emergency service, released photographs depicting garages, a business, and a building on fire in Kyiv, adding that "The number of victims is being clarified."
President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Serbia for his inaugural visit, having previously expressed worries about Ukraine's ability to defend against Russian missile attacks due to dwindling interceptor stockpiles.
Earlier in the week, Zelensky remarked that delays in receiving anti-ballistic systems from partners lead to "horrific casualties and destruction," asserting that a stronger interceptor capability "could have saved lives" in recent fatal assaults.
The president later indicated that the supply of interceptors from allies had been "significantly reduced" this year.
This development followed Ukraine's strikes on two oil refineries deep within Russia, as well as Moscow-linked vessels in the Black Sea. Zelensky stated these actions were intended to curb oil revenues that Russia uses to "finance" its war in Ukraine.
Recent mediation talks have collapsed, leading to an intensification of attacks from both sides.
