Celebrations as Gibraltar-Spain border fence removed
The symbolic midnight ceremony was followed by large crowds crossing between Gibraltar and Spain without border checks.

Celebrations erupted as the fence at the Gibraltar-Spain border was dismantled. Large crowds assembled at the border overnight into Wednesday to witness the removal of the barrier that separated the British overseas territory from the EU member state.
The significant event occurred at midnight, coinciding with the enactment of a new treaty that eliminates the requirement for border checks at the crossing. This agreement, which took years to negotiate following Brexit, integrates Gibraltar into the EU's Schengen Area of free movement, facilitating the transit of goods and individuals.
Gibraltar's Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, was the one to pull down the fence using a rope, prompting hundreds to celebrate at the border.
