The son of Aung San Suu Kyi has been leading a global effort to obtain proof that the democracy advocate is still alive.
For the first time in two and a half years, the imprisoned Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi has had confirmed contact with the outside world, meeting with a delegation from the International Federation of the Red Cross.
Photographs of the meeting, released by the military government, depicted Suu Kyi appearing healthy.
She was arrested shortly after the armed forces overthrew her government in 2021 and was sentenced to 33 years in prison on charges widely considered to be fabricated. However, her sentence has since been reduced, and she has been transferred to house arrest.
Despite repeated assurances from military authorities that Aung San Suu Kyi is alive and well, they have never provided compelling evidence to support these claims.
In recent months, her son, Kim Aris, has launched an international campaign demanding proof of life for the 81-year-old democracy icon.
Now, a delegation from the ICRC has been permitted to meet her, marking her first confirmed meeting with anyone outside the government in nearly four years.
Released photographs of her with the ICRC team show Suu Kyi looking relaxed and well, though no details about her health or the content of their discussions have been provided.

The Myanmar government, still led by coup leader Min Aung Hlaing and largely controlled by the military despite an election held earlier this year, is attempting to break its diplomatic isolation through a series of official visits to neighboring countries.
Among the primary demands made of Myanmar's military leadership are an end to the aerial bombardment of opposition-held areas, the initiation of negotiations to resolve the civil war, and the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.
While these calls have been rejected thus far, the publication of this morning's meeting suggests a potential willingness to concede to the last demand.
