YouTube changes the rules for counting the number of views on a video

YouTube is changing the way it counts views on videos.

Starting August 24, YouTube will start counting views as soon as a video is launched, that is, as soon as the first frame appears. This new system will be implemented for videos of all formats worldwide. This was reported in the official information of the platform.

Previously, the platform used different methods of counting views depending on the format. Now YouTube has decided to standardize this indicator. The company explained this change with the desire to bring the indicator to a single standard and "give creators a more complete picture of the reach of their video."

The platform claims that the new system will not affect monetization: payments will be calculated based on the number of views and hours of viewing as before.

The number of users who continued to watch a video after launching it will remain in YouTube Analytics.

According to The Verge, a similar algorithm for counting views is also used on TikTok and Instagram. On the X social network, a view is counted if a user watches a video for at least two seconds. According to the publication, YouTube used this method last year for YouTube Shorts.
