Yitzhak Rabin, who was close to recognizing Palestine. Why was the Israeli Prime Minister assassinated?
In November 1995, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was shot and killed while attending a rally organized in Tel Aviv to support the peace process with Palestine. At that time, Israel had come very close to recognizing Palestine as an independent state, and Yitzhak Rabin played a major role in this. Unfortunately, the politician's efforts were not to the liking of Jews with radical views, and ultimately the Prime Minister was assassinated.
Israel's aggression against the Palestinian people has been ongoing since 1948. Since then, the Jewish state has refused to recognize the Arab state created by the UN resolution and has continuously occupied Palestinian lands. Over the past years, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians have been expelled from their homes and killed by the Israeli military.
However, there were days in history when Israel came very close to recognizing the Palestinian state. Yitzhak Rabin, who led Israel in the early 1990s, held negotiations with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and peace agreements were signed. But this action did not please some politicians in Israel and radicals who were opposed to the recognition of Palestine. They set out to eliminate Yitzhak Rabin.
Yitzhak Rabin was born in 1922. In that very year, Ottoman-controlled Palestinian lands came under the British Mandate. After graduating from school, he studied agriculture and in 1941 joined the ranks of the "Palmach" military formation organized by Jews. In 1948, the UN adopted a resolution on the creation of the states of Israel and Palestine on Palestinian lands, and soon after, the Arab-Israeli war broke out. Yitzhak Rabin took part in that war.
He continued his military service after the war and held high-ranking positions. In 1964, he became the Chief of General Staff. He performed important duties during the Six-Day War in 1967.
In 1968, having attained the rank of general, Yitzhak Rabin left military service, began his political career, and served as Israel's ambassador to the United States for five years. In 1974, Rabin became Prime Minister of Israel and led the Jewish state until 1977. Later, he headed various ministries. In particular, he served as Israel's Minister of Defense between 1984 and 1990. After winning the election held in 1992, Yitzhak Rabin became Prime Minister of Israel once again.
