Work to eliminate the accident at the Boysun gas field has begun
Work to eliminate the accident at the “25th Anniversary of Independence” (M-25) field in the Boysun district of the Surkhandarya region officially began on August 15. This was reported by Uzbekneftegaz.
In February 2026, the President, at a meeting with residents of the Surkhandarya region, gave the Uzbekneftegaz management an assignment to eliminate the accident at the Boysun field. After that, the company held negotiations with representatives of foreign oil and gas companies and conducted studies in the area. In the end, the Chinese company CNPC was involved in the project.
As part of the project, it is planned to import more than 40 special equipment and drilling equipment from China by the end of 2026. In addition, work to deliver modern equipment from other developed countries suitable for operation in conditions of high-pressure and sour gas with a high sulfur content will continue until December.
Drilling work at the Boysun mine is scheduled to begin in January 2027, and emergency response and mine closure work is scheduled to be completed by July 2027.
About the situation in Boysun
On September 1, 2024, well 604 of the "25th Anniversary of Independence" (M25) mine in Boysun exploded and caught fire during drilling. Then, sulfur (hydrogen sulfide) gas was released into the surrounding area. Residents living near the mine were immediately evacuated to other areas.
Half a month later, on September 17, another explosion occurred at the mine. As a result, 11 people were injured, and 4 mine workers died at the scene.
Later, explosions were observed on March 27 and May 5, 2025. Over the past two years, a number of gas flare-ups have been recorded at the mine. Local residents have made many comments on social media about the unbearable smell of gas, the fact that people are suffering from it, and even getting sick.
Then, in November 2025, reports spread that another gas leak had occurred at the mine in Boysun. The Ministry of Energy reported that a temporary extinction of the previously lit fire was observed in gas well No. 202 of the M-25 mine, which was caused by geological processes in the mine.
In June 2026, Abdugani Sanginov, Chairman of Uzbekneftegaz, announced that the technological accident associated with the gas explosion and leak at the mine would be eliminated by the first half of 2027.
