Why has France halted the use of stun grenades against protesters?

France has paused the use of stun grenades in policing student demonstrations after a 15-year-old boy lost his hand earlier this week in Lens.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said he had asked for the suspension until the facts of the incident were "clarified".

Rights groups have accused police of using excessive force against teenagers who have been protesting all week over old buildings, a shortage of teachers and overcrowded classrooms.

Police unions say they need non-lethal tools such as stun grenades to protect officers in these increasingly violent situations.
