Vucic announced the dissolution of parliament and early elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that, relying on the Constitution and the Law on the President, he would make a decision to dissolve parliament and hold early elections.

Vucic stated that both decisions will be officially announced on September 9 at 12:00 local time. Parliamentary elections in Serbia will be held on October 25, and the election campaign will last 45 days.

The president said he would accept the election results "no matter what they are." He also stated that if his opponents win, he will congratulate them. According to the law, parliamentary elections are appointed by the president of the country, and at least 45 and at most 60 days must pass from the day the elections are appointed to the day of voting.

Prior to this, the main board of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) stated that the current president Aleksandar Vucic would lead the "United Serbia" list in the upcoming parliamentary elections. In the event of a victory, Vucic will be the candidate for prime minister.

Vucic's resignation has been demanded in Serbia for almost two years. This demand began after the roof of the railway station building in the city of Novi Sad collapsed on November 1, 2024, killing 16 people. Following the incident, mass protests intensified in the country. Protesters demanded the punishment of those responsible and the resignation of the country's leadership.

In April 2026, Vucic said he was ready to hold early parliamentary elections. In June, he announced that he would resign in a few weeks. His presidential term ends in 2027, and the next parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held in December 2027.
