Uzbekistan seeks to advance solar and wind projects with Japanese partners

Uzbekistan and Japanese companies Sumitomo Corporation and Shikoku Electric Power have discussed joint energy projects worth $4.2 billion, including solar power plants in Samarkand region, wind farms in Karakalpakstan and energy storage systems.

Uzbekistan is looking to move forward with solar and wind projects together with Japanese partners.

The discussions were held at the Cabinet of Ministers during a meeting involving Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev, Sumitomo Corporation President and CEO Shingo Ueno, and Shikoku Electric Power President and Director Yoshihiro Miyamoto.

The sides concentrated on expanding renewable energy initiatives, with special emphasis on ensuring solar power plants begin operating on time and securing the remaining approvals required to advance a wind power project.

They also discussed possible cooperation in producing cables for power transmission lines, supplying equipment for the mining sector, and delivering ambulances.

Another topic of interest was the experience of Japanese companies in managing special economic zones and in electricity generation, transmission and distribution.

Additional areas for cooperation include upgrading Uzbekistan’s power grids, running energy storage systems, and training specialists for the energy industry.
