Uzbekistan highlights UN resolution on expanding parliaments’ role in social development
Uzbekistan has drawn attention to a UN General Assembly resolution that expands the role of parliaments in social development
Uzbekistan’s Legislative Chamber has outlined details of a UN General Assembly resolution designed to strengthen the role of national parliaments in social development, including poverty reduction, employment, education and social protection. The Committee on International Affairs, Defense and Security of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis presented the resolution at a press conference for media representatives. The briefing also addressed Uzbekistan’s social policy and its involvement in parliamentary diplomacy.
The resolution, called “Enhancing the Role of Parliaments in Accelerating Social Development,” was adopted by the UN General Assembly on July 24, 2026, after an initiative introduced by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. It was co-sponsored by 61 UN member states from different regions. The General Assembly approved the resolution by a recorded vote of 167 countries in favor, one against and no abstentions.
The document identifies national parliaments as actors in advancing social development and urges stronger parliamentary participation in national strategies aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The areas it covers include improvements to national legislation, social protection, poverty reduction, full and productive employment and decent work, access to quality education and broader social inclusion. It also calls for greater transparency and accountability in carrying out social development policies.
The resolution also deals with the involvement of women and young people in parliamentary processes. It calls for the full, equal and meaningful participation of women, including in parliamentary leadership positions, and encourages stronger engagement of young people in parliamentary work related to sustainable development. Digital technologies and artificial intelligence are also addressed. The resolution acknowledges their possible contribution to social development while stressing the need to close digital divides and make technological development inclusive and accessible.
It further calls for deeper cooperation among parliaments, governments and the United Nations, with parliamentary institutions helping turn international social development commitments into national legislation, oversight and accountability mechanisms.
At the press conference, officials also shared data on social development in Uzbekistan. According to the information presented, incomes have risen for 8.5mn vulnerable citizens, while the poverty rate has fallen from nearly 35% to 5.8%. Preschool education coverage was put at 78%, and higher education coverage at 42%.
Committee member Dilbar Mamajonova said the resolution offers a framework for parliaments to play a larger role in social development, social justice and efforts to improve living conditions.
