By 2030, Uzbekistan intends to reduce the number of municipal solid waste landfills by at least 50%. Currently, the country has 200 landfills covering a total area of 1,653.47 hectares, receiving between 14,000 and 15,000 tons of waste daily. These data are provided by the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development.
There are 135 municipal solid waste landfills in Karakalpakstan and 12 other regions. On average, 4,500 to 4,700 trips of specialized equipment from sanitation companies and other organizations are made to them daily. According to the approved plans, the percentage of landfills being reduced will increase gradually: to 20% in 2025, 26% in 2026, 30% in 2027, 35% in 2028, 40% in 2029, and 50% in 2030.
Between 2024 and 2025, 50 solid waste landfills with a total area of 255.9 hectares were closed. Reclamation work was carried out at these sites, resulting in a 26% reduction in the total number of landfills.
In 2026, in accordance with a presidential decree, 18 more municipal waste landfills are planned to be reclaimed. After this, the total number of closed landfills will reach 68, representing a 34% reduction.
At the same time, a waste sorting system is being actively implemented. In the first six months of this year, 98 solid waste landfills were listed on the electronic public procurement platform for competitive selection of entrepreneurs.
As of August 1, the winning entrepreneurs have already been selected for 22 of these sites.
Thus, a further reduction in the number of landfills in the country will be achieved by closing them down, conducting reclamation, and developing waste sorting services.
