Uzbekistan, Germany’s Fraunhofer IPK discuss joint research, Industry 4.0 projects

Uzbekistan and Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (Fraunhofer IPK) recently convened to explore enhanced collaboration in higher education, applied research, innovation, and industrial digitalization. The discussions included potential initiatives such as researcher exchange programs and the establishment of new technology laboratories.
The meeting involved Uzbekistan's Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Kongratbay Sharipov, and Fraunhofer IPK representatives. Key topics addressed were elevating the standard of higher education, bolstering research capabilities, increasing the practical application of scientific advancements, and fostering greater technology transfer between academic institutions, research bodies, and industry.
A significant proposition was the creation of a Fraunhofer–Uzbekistan Young Researchers Mobility Program, drawing inspiration from Fraunhofer’s existing international mobility and Fraunhofer Attract grant schemes. This program would enable young Uzbek researchers to undertake three-to-six-month placements in Fraunhofer laboratories, subsequently engaging in commercialization projects with companies in Uzbekistan.
Further proposals included the establishment of a Fraunhofer Innovation Platform at Tashkent State Technical University, specializing in water and green energy technologies. Additionally, plans were discussed for a digital laboratory dedicated to robotics and artificial intelligence at Tashkent State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
The meeting also touched upon a prospective joint pilot project focused on resource recovery from industrial and wastewater. This project could potentially seek funding from a grant program offered by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research for Central Asia. Participants also considered leveraging Fraunhofer’s expertise to integrate Uzbek scientific innovations into global platforms and facilitate their commercialization.
Representatives from Uzbek universities and research institutes presented their own proposals for future collaboration. Key areas identified for partnership included Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing, technology transfer, and strengthening university-industry alliances.
