Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan consider SOCAR filling stations and oil refining projects

Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are weighing new joint oil and gas ventures, including the rollout of SOCAR filling stations in Uzbekistan, geological exploration, oil refining, and deliveries of crude oil and petroleum products.

These plans were discussed at a meeting in Baku on September 17 attended by Uzbekistan’s Energy Minister Sherzod Khodjayev, Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade Laziz Kudratov, and SOCAR President Rovshan Najaf.

The discussions centered on carrying out the goals set during the August 23–24 meetings between Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as well as deepening energy-sector cooperation between the two countries. The sides examined plans to build a network of filling stations in Uzbekistan with SOCAR’s involvement. They also looked at the current stage of geological exploration at investment blocks in Uzbekistan’s Ustyurt region and ways to speed up the work.

Another topic was cooperation between SOCAR and Uzbek companies. The participants considered options for broadening existing partnerships and launching additional joint investment projects. The talks also included plans to create oil refining capacity and arrange imports of crude oil and petroleum products. The participants reviewed the current status and pace of implementation of projects in these areas and outlined further steps to fulfill previously reached agreements.

The meeting came after wider energy discussions between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan in Baku on September 17. The two countries have named oil and gas exploration and production, petroleum supplies, refining, and the expansion of SOCAR’s activities in Uzbekistan as key areas of energy cooperation.

Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are also working to carry out agreements reached during the August meetings between Mirziyoyev and Aliyev. The latest talks were aimed at settling unresolved issues tied to joint projects and moving their implementation forward.
