Uzbekistan adopts bill on radioactive waste management
Uzbekistan's Legislative Chamber has adopted a bill establishing safety, tracking and disposal rules for radioactive waste across the country.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) – The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis in Uzbekistan has given its approval to a new bill concerning the management of radioactive waste. This legislation introduces frameworks designed to guarantee safety throughout every phase of radioactive waste handling, alongside provisions aimed at safeguarding individuals, assets, and the natural world from its detrimental impacts.
A key component of the bill mandates the compulsory state registration and ongoing oversight of all radioactive waste within Uzbekistan. Furthermore, it calls for the creation of a national registry for radioactive waste, which will serve to organize data regarding its volume, whereabouts, and transit.
This registration system is anticipated to mitigate the dangers of radioactive waste being lost, misused without authorization, or stolen.
The bill also includes distinct clauses outlining safety mandates for the selection of sites, architectural planning, construction, operational procedures, and eventual closure of facilities designated for the containment and disposal of radioactive waste.
Additionally, the legislation specifies the methods for funding these initiatives. The financial burden for the secure management of radioactive waste will fall upon the organizations responsible for its creation or ownership.
During the deliberation of this document, legislators expressed their view that the enactment of this bill would enhance governmental supervision over radioactive waste management, facilitate the integration of contemporary safety protocols, and reinforce safeguards for both the populace and the environment.
Subsequent to its review, the Legislative Chamber officially passed the bill.
