Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — From July 26 to August 3, 2023, a regional capacity-building seminar on “Ecosystem services assessment, rainwater harvesting and land restoration monitoring” and a field academy “From rain to restoration” were held in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. These events were organized by the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA).

These events were organized within the framework of the “Food Systems, Land Use and Land Restoration Impact Program in Uzbekistan (FOLUR)” implemented in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Center for Agricultural Projects in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The training program, organized in collaboration with ICARDA and the Jordanian National Agricultural Research Center (NARC), brought together representatives from the National Center for Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation, the Project Office, sectoral research institutions, and FAO.

During the program, participants learned about ICARDA and Jordanian best practices in ecosystem services assessment, rainwater harvesting and efficient management, restoration of degraded lands and pastures, natural resource monitoring, wastewater reuse, and the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE Nexus) approach. Field exercises and demonstrations of innovative technologies were organized in addition to theoretical training.

The knowledge and practical experience gained during this international seminar and field academy will serve to implement innovative approaches to sustainable management of land and water resources, prevention of land degradation, effective use of rainwater, and climate change adaptation in Uzbekistan.
