US Mexican food chain Chipotle to open first restaurant in Mexico
Other US fast food brands have struggled to succeed in the countries their dishes originated.

Chipotle to Launch Its First Restaurant in Mexico
Chipotle operates over 4,100 locations worldwide.
Chipotle Mexican Grill is preparing to open its inaugural restaurant in Mexico this week, aiming to gauge its popularity in the nation that inspired its culinary offerings.
The company, which boasts more than 4,100 restaurants globally, announced on Monday that this venture represents a "significant milestone" for the brand, recognized for its customizable burritos, tacos, and bowls.
The news has sparked a mixed reaction on social media, with numerous users ridiculing the decision.
American restaurant chains have often faced challenges in succeeding in the countries where their dishes originated. Taco Bell has exited the Mexican market, while Domino's Pizza withdrew from Italy.
Chipotle's CEO Scott Boatwright stated, "We are entering Mexico with deep respect for the country's culinary heritage and a commitment to delivering the Chipotle experience with excellence." He added, "We look forward to serving new guests and earning a place in Mexico's vibrant dining culture."
The new establishment, situated in the northeastern state of Nuevo León near the Texas border, is described by the company as an "important proof-of-concept."
Chipotle plans to open additional locations in Nuevo León and expand into Mexico City by 2027 in partnership with Mexican restaurant operator Alsea, which also manages brands like Domino's Pizza, Starbucks, and Chili's.
Reactions on the internet have been divided regarding Chipotle's entry into Mexico.
One commenter on X remarked, "Bold move selling Mexico a corporate version of Mexico."
Another post questioned why Mexicans would choose Chipotle when they have "perfectly fine and healthy food available to them."
A further comment joked, "Next up, Panda Express opening its first mainland China location," referencing the US chain specializing in Chinese cuisine.
Many users drew parallels with other American chains like Taco Bell, which has attempted to penetrate markets that inspired its menu.
Taco Bell has made two unsuccessful attempts to establish itself in Mexico, despite being one of the largest fast food franchises globally. The chain exited the country in 2010 after failing to attract Mexican customers.
Domino's Pizza closed its last locations in Italy, the birthplace of pizza, in 2022 after facing tough competition from local eateries since its entry seven years prior.
