Prices in the US increased 3.4% in the year to August, with higher gasoline prices pushing up the cost of living, official figures show.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the overall inflation rate was unchanged from July.
The data comes before the Federal Reserve announces its latest interest rate decision next week, amid rising expectations that rates will be raised in an effort to slow the pace of price increases.
US household budgets have faced increasing strain, particularly at the fuel pumps, where a gallon of diesel reached a new record average of more than $6 on Friday.
The jump in fuel prices has been driven by higher global oil prices, caused by supply disruptions as a result of the US-Iran war.
