US announces fresh raft of tariffs on overseas goods
The tariffs target around 60 trading partners over claims they failed to properly stop forced labour.
The United States has unveiled a new series of tariffs targeting products imported from abroad. These fresh levies, set between 10% and 12.5%, are directed at approximately 60 trade allies, among them the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada, Japan, and India. The justification for these measures stems from allegations that these partners have not adequately curbed forced labor practices. This action marks the newest intensification in the worldwide trade conflict, a conflict rekindled by US President Donald Trump upon his return to office in January of last year. This development follows a ruling by the US Supreme Court earlier this year, which determined that numerous tariffs previously implemented globally through emergency powers were enacted unlawfully. Consequently, the president has since explored alternative legal channels to advance his primary trade agenda.
