US and Israel preparing plan for new strikes against Iran — media
The US and Israel are developing a plan for a next military operation against Iran should diplomatic efforts fail. Axios reported this, citing American and Israeli officials. According to the portal, if the parties fail to reach an agreement, a potential military campaign could begin after the US congressional midterm elections.
Axios sources say the allies are considering the possibility of conducting a one-week operation. As part of it, strikes could be carried out against Iran's nuclear facilities, energy infrastructure, and representatives of the country's supreme leadership. To coordinate actions, Commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), Admiral Brad Cooper, met with the Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Eyal Zamir.
Meanwhile, regional mediators, including Qatar, continue to seek ways to prevent further escalation of the conflict. According to Axios, they are trying to persuade Tehran to allow International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors access to nuclear facilities in exchange for partial sanctions relief.
Against the backdrop of this process, Washington is taking diplomatic steps to resume negotiations with Iran. According to The Wall Street Journal, US Vice President JD Vance, acting on instructions from President Donald Trump, sent a letter to the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaee.
The newspaper's sources note that Vance is trying to determine whether there is enough common ground to continue negotiations between the parties and convince Trump to forgo restarting military actions in the coming weeks.
According to the publication, the letter did not outline specific proposals for achieving peace.
The WSJ also notes that despite publicly supporting military action against Iran, Vance expressed doubts in private conversations about the necessity of continuing the operation.
Earlier, Trump did not rule out that new strikes could be launched against Iran after the US congressional midterm elections. Thus, amid media reports about a military scenario being prepared, diplomatic contacts are also continuing.
In mid-June, the US and Iran signed a memorandum that was supposed to serve as a starting point for the peace process.
However, according to the cited information, strikes resumed three weeks later. Subsequent attempts to resolve the conflict have not led to an agreement so far.
